How do mobile apps align with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?

We all heard about Maslow and his hierarchy of needs, but how does it interact with the mobile evolution?

People use their smartphones more and more and a comScore Infographic shows us how this use actually satisfies the five needs identified by Maslow.

Just as a reminder, the Maslow needs are physiological needs, safety, love & belonging, self-esteem and self actualization.

First off we have the physiological needs and these are met with health, apparel, retail food and real estate apps.

The next need, safety, is met with banking, weather and career services apps.

The need for love and belonging is met by apps that help you connect with others, be it friends, family or strangers. In this category are messenger apps, the most popular being WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, QQMessenger & Line as well as dating apps.

The need for self-esteem is mostly met by social networking. The study shows that Facebook is becoming the place where people broadcast their opinion, so that it can be validated by others.

Finally, the need for self-actualization is met by travel apps, as well as blogging and learning apps.

At NXTHUB, we’ll do an initial brainstorm with you to see how the app that you want to us to develop could optimally meet a need of the market.
